Mikel Arteta and Edu have been given a list of three players to sign for Arsenal, which includes top Manchester United target Declan Rice.
The England midfielder is helping West Ham challenge for a top-six spot in the Premier League this season. He is also integral to their push for Europa League glory.
Rice is likely to captain the Hammers in both legs of their UEL semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Given his solid displays over the past couple of seasons, it’s no surprise England’s biggest clubs are hoping to sign him.
Manchester United and Chelsea are both keeping tabs on the situation. Manchester City could also move in to make Rice a replacement for Fernandinho.
Fabrizio Romano provided a huge update over Rice’s future on Friday. He claims the 23-year-old has rejected a third contract offer from West Ham.
Plus, the star is ‘open’ to leaving the London Stadium as early as this summer.
Arsenal told to get in the mix for Declan Rice
Of course, that has put all of his potential suitors on red alert. And former Arsenal player Emmanuel Frimpong wants the Gunners to join the transfer race.
During an interview with The Sun, he said: “I would like to have Declan Rice.
“He’s a very good player, improved a lot and shown a lot of maturity for his age. He’s done really well for West Ham, I’m a huge fan of his.
“A midfield of him and [Thomas] Partey would be a very strong midfield partnership.”
Frimpong then told Arteta and Edu to strengthen two more positions to help them reach the next level.
“I’d also like another left-back to compete with [Kieran] Tierney,” he added. “I feel like we’re really struggling in that department at the moment.
“I’d also want us to sign a striker – there aren’t any that come to mind that are realistic signings at the minute, but that’s one position we really need to strengthen.”
Frimpong, who made 16 appearances for Arsenal, thinks his former club can catch up with the likes of Liverpool and City if they continue to back Arteta.
“A lot can happen in the five years, when [Jurgen] Klopp came to Liverpool nobody was thinking they could win the Champions League as soon as they won it,” the pundit said.
“Sometimes, you can get the right manager but if the board is not backing you, it becomes incredibly difficult.
“Arteta got the board to back him, they bought some quality players and this next transfer window they need to go the extra mile again, bringing even more players as the squad is thin.
“If they invest in a squad, I don’t see why they can’t be competing for titles within the next five years. Why not?”
