Trent Alexander-Arnold admits his form for Liverpool has fallen below the high standards he established in previous campaigns.
The Reds right-back has been one of the team’s star performers in the last few seasons.
He helped them lift the Champions League in 2019. And he was one of the standouts as Liverpool finally ended their 30-year title wait in 2020.
Alexander-Arnold scored four goals and contributed 13 assists when Liverpool were crowned champions. He also provided 12 assists in the 2018/19 campaign.
But his numbers aren’t up to those levels this time. The hometown hero has registered just three assists in his 20 appearances and only scored a single goal.
In addition, his defensive capabilities have been called into question. Liverpool have conceded 25 goals this season. That’s nearly twice as many as Manchester City.
That drop-off is part of the reason why Liverpool are struggling to launch a creditable title defence. They’ve slipped to fourth and could fall 10 points behind Man City if they lose to the leaders at Anfield on Sunday.
Alexander-Arnold isn’t one to shy away from criticism. And he gave a very honest assessment during an interview with Sky Sports via Goal.
Alexander-Arnold says rhythm hard to find
Asked if he was performing to previous high standards, he replied: “Me? No.
“There’s been times this season I felt like I’ve been playing quite well. Recently I’ve been trying to get back into that rhythm I was talking about earlier from a personal point of view.
“It’s been a tough season in that respect in just trying to find that rhythm and get back into it and just letting things happen naturally. It’s been quite difficult.
“But again, there’s no excuses. I want to try to make things happen for the team and perform as well as I can to help us win games. And that’s what I’m trying to do.”
Liverpool have just 10 wins from the 20 Premier League games he’s played this season. That contrasts to 32 wins from 38 matches last term.
