Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could leave his Anfield contract early because of reluctance from the club’s owners to spend, according to one pundit.
Klopp has achieved legendary status in recent years by winning the Premier League and Champions League with the Reds.
Key big-money signings such as Virgil van Dijk, who cost £75million, have proved vital in their form.
But while the Reds have spent big sums, their Fenway Sports Group owners have done so without outlaying much of their own money. Indeed, Phillipe Coutinho’s £142million sale to Barcelona funded Van Dijk and Alisson Becker’s arrivals.
Therefore, with Liverpool not selling anyone for anywhere near that amount since, funds for new defenders in the January transfer window were hard to come by.
Klopp showed his frustration after the 1-0 defeat to Burnley, insisting that he has only ever made signing “recommendations”. Speaking to Sky Sports, Jamie Redknapp tipped the German manager to move on before his contract is up in 2024.
“I thought Jurgen’s words were really interesting,” the pundit said. “I sensed frustration with him because he wanted a new player. The problem was who could Liverpool buy to replace Virgil Van Dijk?
“You can’t spend £50-60 million on a player knowing that in April your best player is coming back from injury. It could cause more problems than it’s worth.
“I was surprised to hear what Jurgen said – and maybe in a couple of years he might want to leave to manage someone like Bayern Munich.
“That always seems to be the calling for a lot of German players and managers.
“I think there was a sense of frustration with him, but once Liverpool get their best players back at the end of the season I am sure he will be fine.”
Klopp’s frustrations laid bare
Klopp said after the recent defeat to Burnley at Anfield: “Of course somebody else is making the decisions. It was always like this. If people are surprised by that now, I can’t help them.
“We think about ‘could we improve something or not?’ and I make recommendations, stuff like this.
“But I cannot spend the money. That’s not how it is. I don’t make these decisions, and I never did.”
Klopp was responding to one of countless questions he faced about his desire to find a new centre-back. But amid the reluctance to spend, the Reds paid £1.6million for Ben Davies before signing Ozan Kabak on loan.
