West Brom are reportedly targeting a double swoop for Blackburn Rovers duo Joe Rothwell and Darragh Lenihan this summer.
The Baggies have suffered a disappointing campaign, having been backed for promotion at the start of the season. With one game remaining Steve Bruce’s men sit 10th in the table, and have never looked like achieving promotion in 2022. Now, it seems the club have turned their attention to next season, as they eye up two top performers within the Championship.
According to journalist Alan Nixon via Patreon, West Brom are keen on landing Rovers duo Rothwell and Lenihan once the season has been completed.
Both players are out of contract at Ewood Park in summer, and will be available for a free transfer.
Rovers have had a more successful campaign then the Baggies, and looked like achieving at least play-offs for the majority of the campaign.
However, an extended dip in form kicked them outside the top six, meaning Rovers will also be competing in the Championship next season.
But both Lenihan and Rothwell have been influential for the Lancashire club this season. Both have featured in 41 of the 45 league matches, and will no doubt be missed in Blackburn next campaign.
Lenihan has been with Rovers since 2011, and has featured in over 200 games for the club. However, no new contract means the centre-back will likely be ending his 11-year stay at the club soon.
West Brom face Joe Rothwell competition
West Brom are not the only club being linked with a move for Rothwell.
After an impressive season, Rothwell has attracted interested from a number of Championship clubs, including AFC Bournemouth.
The Cherries attempted to sign Rothwell in January, however, the deal broke down and Todd Cantwell was recruited instead.
With Bournemouth still heavily linked, Rovers boss Tony Mowbray reflected on the January offer this weekend.
Mowbray also went on to claim that his midfielder would not look out of place inside the Premier League.
He told Lancashire Telegraph: “I think Bournemouth made a very good financial offer to another football club and our club had to make a decision as to whether we accepted that offer.
“The boy has been very professional and worked really hard on the back of the decision the club made. He might not have done that, but he has and contributed with his performance level.
“He still has a bit to go in his development but I’m sure he can play in the Premier League.”
Currently second in the table with two games to go, Bournemouth look set for a return to the Premier League.
This may tempt Rothwell to move further south, in order to play football inside the top flight.
