Liverpool have decided whether to offer Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino a new contract at Anfield, according to one journalist.
Firmino has made over 320 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Hoffenheim in July 2015. He has managed 98 goals and 73 assists in that time.
While the 30-year-old is not the most prolific in front of goal, he has enabled forward partners Mo Salah and Sadio Mane to reach some impressive numbers.
But the Reds are gradually moving away from Firmino. This is mainly due to the signings of Diogo Jota and now Luis Diaz.
The latter is making a big impact on Merseyside after arriving from Porto in January. And he is already making a claim to start on the left flank in big games.
Due to these factors, Firmino’s future at Liverpool has come into question. Many clubs would be willing to snap him up given his attractive style of play.
Roberto Firmino contract update given
Liverpool Echo journalist Theo Squires has provided an update on the star’s future. He claims the Reds will open contract renewal talks with Firmino once the futures of Salah and Mane are set in stone.
Despite his influence on the first team waning slightly, Liverpool have no intention of letting him leave. And with his current deal expiring next year, discussions over a new one could begin this summer.
Of course, the decision will also rest on Firmino’s shoulders. Should he want to get regular game time elsewhere, then a transfer away from Liverpool could take place.
Last month, Firmino revealed how his relationship with Klopp began to blossom following the manager’s arrival in October 2015.
When asked about his first conversations with the German, Firmino said: “That’s difficult! I remember we exchanged messages and in person it was when he arrived here at Liverpool.
“I told him how happy I was that he’d come here and here I am today, very happy alongside him.
“His arrival here changed everything. We really clicked and got on great immediately.
“I knew him already from playing against him in Germany, I knew him, he knew me. I grew and developed a lot here thanks to him.”
