Four Manchester United players were “furious” that they could not speak to the protestors whose actions led to the postponement of their game against Liverpool on Sunday, it has been claimed.
United were due to play Liverpool on Sunday at 4:30pm, but kick-off was delayed when fans broke into Old Trafford. Protestors were making a stand against the Glazer family, but there were some ugly scenes. In the end, the match was postponed to a later date.
United fans have never had a good relationship with the club’s owners. Things became even more heated in the wake of the European Super League saga last month.
Although they quickly reversed their decision, United were one of six Premier League clubs who intended to break away into a controversial new competition. It brought the distrust between fans and owners back into the limelight.
Protestors invaded the club’s training ground recently and things escalated when they congregated outside Old Trafford on Sunday. Some broke into the ground and there were some scenes of violence.
When the training ground incident occurred, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and midfielder Nemanja Matic spoke to the protestors. They managed to persuade them to leave.
This time, the squad remained stuck at their hotel due to Covid-19 precautions.
However, one of the protestors claims to have been told by Sky Sports reporter James Cooper that some of the players wanted to intervene.
On Twitter, @Mufcwesleyy of United Captured claimed: “I spoke to James Cooper earlier and he told me that the players at the Lowry Hotel pleaded with the staff to allow them outside and to engage with the fans protesting.
“The club said no and the players were left absolutely furious.
“James Cooper stated that Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay were all trying to convince officials to allow engagement with the United protestors outside of the Lowry Hotel.”
There has been no official confirmation of the rumour from Sky.
The attention will soon turn to when the game can be rescheduled for. But beyond that, debates over the ownership will continue.
Neville voices discontent with Glazers
Former player Gary Neville has been a vocal critic of the Glazers and backed the protests.
He said on Sky: “This is a consequence of the Manchester United owners’ actions two weeks ago. There is a general distrust and dislike of the owners, but they weren’t protesting two or three weeks ago.
“The Glazer family are struggling to meet the financial requirements at this club and the fans are saying that their time is up.
“My view is quite simply that they’re going to make a fortune if they sell the club and if they were to put it up for sale now I think the time would be right, and it would be the honourable thing to do.
“There’s huge discontent, not just across Manchester United fans, but I think for football fans up and down the country and I think they are just saying enough is enough.
“The Glazer family have been resilient and stubborn for many, many years. I think they are struggling to meet the financial demands that this club needs and have done for some time.”
