Aston Villa centre back Ezri Konsa has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new contract until the end of the 2025/26 season.
Since joining from Brentford in summer 2019, Konsa has established himself as a key man in the Villa defence. He made 31 appearances in his debut season, his first in the top flight. This term, he has made a further 27 appearances and developed an impressive partnership with Tyrone Mings.
His displays had reportedly attracted interest from some top clubs, including Liverpool and Tottenham.
Amid those rumours, one pundit even claimed that Konsa is worth over £60million, so good has he been.
But Villa no longer need to fear losing one a much-valued player after he put-pen-to-paper on a new deal.
“I’m really grateful that the club have rewarded me with a new contract,” Konsa told VillaTV.
“It’s a great feeling to know the club really believes in you and has trust in you. It’s something I’ve been working towards since I got here, proving myself and playing games week in, week out.”
Konsa targets defensive record
Villa’s significantly improved defensive resilience has received plenty of due praise. It has also helped put them in contention for European football.
They have kept 14 clean sheets so far this campaign, already double what they managed in the entirety of 2019/20.
And while Konsa admits he is “proud” of that statistic, he clearly now has his sights set on at least matching the Villa record for most shutouts achieved in one season.
“It’s been a really good season for us, especially the lads at the back with the amount of clean sheets – we’re only one away from matching the clean sheet record for Aston Villa,” he added.
“We have great chemistry at the back, including (goalkeeper) Emiliano Martinez. For me personally, it’s been a very good season, for my standards and what I wanted to reach this season.
“I’m really proud of what me and the boys have achieved this season.”
Villa will have ten attempts to keep the two clean sheets required to break that record.
But they could match it on Sunday when they host 18th placed Fulham in their first game back after the international break.
