It has also helped put them in contention for European football. They have kept 14 clean sheets so far this campaign, already double what they managed in the entirety of 2019/20. And while Konsa admits he is “proud” of that statistic, he clearly now has his sights set on at least matching the Villa record for most shutouts achieved in one season. “It’s been a really good season for us, especially the lads at the back with the amount of clean sheets – we’re only one away from matching the clean sheet record for Aston Villa,” he added. “We have great chemistry at the back, including (goalkeeper) Emiliano Martinez. For me personally, it’s been a very good season, for my standards and what I wanted to reach this season. “I’m really proud of what me and the boys have achieved this season.” Villa will have ten attempts to keep the two clean sheets required to break that record. But they could match it on Sunday when they host 18th placed Fulham in their first game back after the international break.
