Reports claim Premier League duo Crystal Palace and Brighton are set to go head to head to sign Wolves defender Dion Sanderson.
Sanderson, 21, is currently on loan at League One club Sunderland. He has impressed all at the Stadium of Light, making 11 starts among 18 league appearances.
The versatile stopper came up through the Wolves youth ranks before making his first-team debut in October 2019. That came in an EFL Cup tie but he has yet to play a league game for the Molineux outfit.
Having starred for Wolves Under-23s, he was he loaned out to Cardiff City in January 2020. The youngster played 10 times for the Bluebirds before returning to the West Midlands.
He then penned a contract extension with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side until the summer of 2022. However there was no place in the senior side and he was farmed out to Wearside.
Things have gone well in the north east. He began to shine under Phil Parkinson and is now a regular with Lee Johnson at the helm.
The boss recently switched his position from right-back to centre-half and Sanderson coped admirably. He scored his first goal for the club in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Rochdale.
Sunderland would love to keep him beyond the terms of his loan deal but that seems unlikely to happen.
Plenty of suitors
The Black Cats would need to gain promotion to the Championship to tempt him to stay. They are currently fourth in the table and battling for automatic promotion.
More likely is a move to the Premier League, with rivals Brighton and Palace keen, according to the Mail. Sanderson is highly thought of at Wolves and may still have a future at the club.
However, it has been suggested that Nuno is open to letting him leave if the right offer comes in. He will be a free agent at the end of next season and so any move if likely to happen this summer.
Other interested parties include Championship quartet Cardiff, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City. It seems as though the Eagles might push hard for the player, with Roy Hodgson looking to reduce the squad’s age.
The likes of Joel Ward and Gary Cahill are not getting any younger. Sanderson looks an exciting prospect who could have a huge future at the top level.
The Selhurst Park hierarchy will be hoping it is with them.
