Reports claim Manchester City have beaten off competition for Fluminense’s Kayky and are close to securing a deal for the Brazilian starlet.
The Premier League leaders have been keeping tabs on the South American for some time. But they are not the only club with an interest in the 17-year-old.
At the end of January, Liverpool were mentioned as a possible suitor. It was reported that discussions over a move to Anfield had already begun.
Reds star Roberto Firmino was reportedly the man driving the interest, while Shakhtar Donetsk were also keen. However, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano is suggesting that the Citizens have won the race for the forward.
Sportsmail reported in January that City were hoping to sign Fluminense duo Kayky and Metinho. Issues over the money involved stalled the move, with a combined fee of £15m reportedly offered for the pair.
It is said City offered €10m for Kayky, with add-ons raising the deal to €17. And it seems as though they are on the verge of getting their man.
The teenager has been earmarked for the north-west giants’ youth set-up if and when he arrives in Manchester. Kayky has yet to make a senior appearance for Fluminense.
But scouting reports have been favourable, with the Brazil Under-16 star likened to compatriot Neymar. Unsurprisingly, he has also been linked with several Spanish clubs but City appear to have usurped them all.
City taking youthful approach
While Kayky will need to develop in the youth teams, one player who might make an immediate impact is Darwin Nunez. The 21-year-old striker joined Benfica from Spanish club Almeria last summer.
The Portuguese outfit paid a club-record fee of £21.6million. And they have been rewarded with 10 goals from 28 appearances in all competitions.
He has also chipped in with nine assists and scored twice for Uruguay from just four outings. Many clubs have been eyeing the talented youngster and it seems inevitable there will be offers in the summer.
City have doubts over the future of injury-plagued striker Sergio Aguero. He is undoubtedly a legend at the Etihad but will fall out of contract at the end of 2020-2021.
The 32-year-old has hardly featured this term and a decision on his future will need to be made. With 256 City goals to his name, the Argentinian will be tough to replace.
But Pep Guardiola might already have identified the man who could fill his boots in the long term.
