Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is set to suffer a double heartache following the tragic death of his father in Brazil.
Jose Becker, 57, had been swimming at a dam on his property when the accident happened on Wednesday afternoon, Doroteo Machado Filho, a police inspector in the town of Lavras do Sul, told Reuters.
With no direct flights from the UK to Brazil currently permitted due to Covid-19 restrictions, Alisson now faces the heartache of missing his father’s funeral, which is set to take place in the coming days.
This is a repeat of the story that struck Jurgen Klopp and his family last month, as he was unable to attend the funeral of his mother Elisabeth following her passing in January.
Alisson has spoken about the impact his father had on his career, with his brother Muriel, 34, also a goalkeeper at Brazilian club Fluminense.
“I have a family of goalkeepers,” Alisson told the Liverpool website in 2018.
“My father played for his work team, my mother played handball in school, and my grandfather played in amateur football. And after all this, came my brother playing and then I started to like it, too.
“I started to watch him training and then started feeling passion for the position. It’s in my blood, it’s in my family, so I started to follow them and to play in goal.”
Fluminense have expressed their condolences.
Reports in Brazil say that 57-year-old Jose Agostinho Becker drowned after going for a swim on his property.
Fluminense said on Twitter: “Fluminense Football Club deeply regret the passing of Jose Agostinho Becker, father of goalkeepers Muriel and Alisson. We wish all strength to his friends and family.”

Liverpool made the following statement: “Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Alisson Becker’s father, Jose, in Brazil on Wednesday.
“The thoughts of everybody at the club are with Alisson and the Becker family at this incredibly sad and difficult time.
“The club requests that the media respects the privacy of Alisson and his family during this time.”
It’s unclear whether Alisson will be available to face Sheffield United on Sunday night.
New contender to succeed Klopp
Meanwhile, a new man has emerged as a contender, a “natural replacement” to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
Klopp is under contract at Anfield until 2024 and there has been no suggestions of an extension to that deal.
The Mirror claims “candidates are already being sounded out” to replace Klopp when he does walk away.
The most likely candidates to replace Klopp are currently Steven Gerrard, Julian Nagelsmann and Klopp’s assistant Pep Lijnders.
However, according to the Blood Red podcast, there appears to be a new name in the frame. That is 44-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach boss Marco Rose.
