Former Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has hit back at stinging criticism from Piers Morgan with a fiery social media post.
Ozil, 32, became a divisive figure during the latter stages of his career in North London.
Despite Mikel Arteta’s side often struggling for creativity, the German was not brought back in from the cold.
With six months remaining on his deal, he and the club came to a mutual agreement to terminate his contract prematurely.
Arteta delivered a somewhat baffling tribute to his former star after the financial details of his Fenerbahce move were revealed.
One person who did not hand Ozil a positive send-off, however, was Morgan.
The Good Morning Britain host is one of England’s most prominent and outspoken celebrity Arsenal fans.
A frequent vocal critic of Ozil, Morgan took particular joy in his belated departure from the Emirates.
Giving his own unique goodbye on Twitter, Morgan said (via the Express): “Loved @MesutOzil1088 when he first came to Arsenal.
“World class player with a sublime natural talent. Now I can’t wait to see the back of the lazy manipulative £350,000-a-week wastrel.
“You could have been a club legend, Mesut – but you just couldn’t be bothered. Bye.”
Predictably, those comments did not go unanswered by Ozil, who took to Twitter with the following riposte.
Piers, I took this with me from London to Istanbul to remind me of you! 🧻🧻 Although you probably knew that already before … #PoopOnPiers @piersmorgan pic.twitter.com/Z0dRzQ5gB0

Leicester new frontrunners for Arsenal star
Meanwhile, Leicester City have emerged as the new favourites to make a late January swoop for Arsenal and England star Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
The 23-year-old has put Premier League rivals on alert after declaring he wants to move.
The Gunners ace has eyes on playing in this summer’s European Championships. But he’s being denied game time under Mikel Arteta. And he knows that will count against him in his bid to make Gareth Southgate‘s squad.
It’s already understood that three Premier League teams have shown an interest. The trio are Southampton, West Brom and Newcastle.
But The Mirror suggest Leicester could now be in pole position. The Foxes could come in with a loan deal and an option to make it permanent this summer.
