West Brom are hoping to do a deal for Celta’s Turkey international Okay Yokuslu this month as the battle against relegation continues.
The Baggies gave themselves a glimmer of hope by beating Wolves in Saturday’s Black Country derby. The 3-2 triumph was just their second of the season and they still sit five points from safety.
The good news is they have Sam Allardyce in charge – a master at escaping the drop. He has already brought in veteran winger Robert Snodgrass from West Ham and may now look overseas.
Yokuslu is an experienced defensive midfielder, ideal for shoring up a defence that has shipped 41 goals to date. That number tops the Premier League charts and is an area of concern for the former England boss.
Albion have opened discussions with the Spanish side about a loan deal in January, according to the Mail on Sunday.
Celta sit just outside the European places in La Liga. However, they are said to be open to offers for the versatile 26-year-old.
He has made just three starts from 11 league outings and appears surplus to requirements. The former Trabzonspor ace can also play at centre-back and has been capped 29 times by Turkey.
The Baggies are reportedly targeting three players in the current window to boost their survival hopes.
African ace the answer to goal shortage?
Allardyce is known as a manager who organises defences to make his teams hard to beat. Yokuslu certainly fits that particular bill but he also needs to improve his goal output.
With only 14 in the league this term, there is every reason to suggest a new striker might be on the way. Galatasaray’s Senegal international striker Mbaye Diagne has been strongly linked with a move to the Hawthorns.
The 29- year-old has been in superb form for the Turkish giants. He has bagged nine Super Lig goals from 14 outings and scored another two in all competitions.
Those numbers have alerted a few clubs and Albion are yet to make an offer. He is an alternative to Hoffenheim’s Ishak Belfodil.
Allardyce was keen on the Algeria international but the clubs failed to agree on a loan deal. There are still two weeks left to bring in new players and the merry-go-round will turn until the 11th hour.
‘Big Sam’ has dug clubs out of holes before but faces his toughest challenge at West Brom. He will need help at the back and up front and appears to be doing his best to address the issues.
