Unwanted Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has rejected a January transfer to Genoa, claims a report.
The German centre-back is one of the players that Mikel Arteta is trying offload this month.
The 28-year-old is out of contract in June and can speak to other clubs this month and move for free in the summer.
His agent claimed he was in talks with Barcelona last month.
Emre Ozturk posted a photo of himself preparing for a meeting with Barcelona on Instagram. He titled this post “ready for meeting” and he has confirmed to SPOX that he was there to discuss Mustafi.
SPOX journalist Fabian Zerche said (via Sport Witness): “I’m not in Barcelona because of Yusuf Demir, but because of Shkodran Mustafi from Arsenal, whom we also represent.”
A move to Catalonia has not be forthcoming though and now Calciomercato report he has turned down a move to Genoa.
Apparently did not want to move to the club having previously played for their rivals Sampdoria.
Serie A side Genoa had ‘focused’ on a move for the Arsenal man because of his experience in Italy.
But after making over 5o appearances for Samp between 2012-14, the centre-back has rejected the opportunity to play for their cross-city rivals
Mustafi is expected to leave Arsenal this month having played just three times in the Premier League. His agent is working on a cut-price transfer in January rather than waiting for a free-transfer switch in the summer.
Saliba opens up on exit
Meanwhile, William Saliba has admitted he was disappointed not to even get a chance at Arsenal.
Saliba joined Arsenal from Saint-Etienne in 2019 but was immediately loaned back to the French side for experience.
He was unable to complete the season in Ligue 1 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Arsenal failed to come to an agreement with Saint-Etienne over extending his loan.
Hence, the young defender returned to north London in the summer of 2020. However, he could not find a space in the first team as had been expected of him.
The centre-back has given his first press conference at Nice. and says he is already feeling the benefits of playing.
He said (via Get French Football News): “Things happened very quickly (in terms of the transfer), especially because two days before (the match), I arrived quite late, I did my medical etc.
“But what’s for sure is that I was coming from Arsenal U23s, and what is for sure is that the rhythm at professional level and U23 level is not the same.
“But I wanted to play and I trained so hard at Arsenal. That’s why the coach put me in directly on Wednesday. But certainly I had not played for a while and that has done me good.”
