The Arsenal career of Mesut Ozil could conclude “in a short time” with the club and player reportedly negotiating drastic action to facilitate his exit.
For large parts of the current campaign, Arsenal have struggled in the creative department.
Talismanic striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been devoid of service. As a result, the Gabon superstar has just three league goals to his name.
Despite their difficulties in creating chances, the once-crucial Ozil was not brought back in from the cold by Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal have begun to turn their ship around in recent weeks, and with just six months remaining on his current deal, Ozil’s exit seems a mere formality.
Turkish outfit Fenerbahce are the likeliest candidates to acquire his services. A recent report outlined the details of the proposed move including a rather significant wage reduction.
The belief was that Ozil would move initially on loan before making his switch permanent in the summer.
However, the Sun (citing Turkish outlet TRT) reveal that his permanent departure could in fact come this month.
They note that Arsenal and Ozil have ‘begun talks to terminate his contract’, worth £350,000 per week.
That would equate to £7.2m in unpaid wages, with Ozil reportedly having the option to ‘waive some of the cash he is due’ or ‘hold firm and demand the full amount he is entitled’.
Talks are said to be in progress today, with a solution due ‘in a short time’.
Arsenal outcast rejects Serie A transfer
Meanwhile, unwanted Gunners defender Shkodran Mustafi has rejected a January transfer to Genoa, claims a report.
The German centre-back is one of the players that Mikel Arteta is trying offload this month.
The 28-year-old is out of contract in June and can speak to other clubs this month and move for free in the summer.
His agent claimed he was in talks with Barcelona last month.
Emre Ozturk posted a photo of himself preparing for a meeting with Barcelona on Instagram. He titled this post “ready for meeting” and he has confirmed to SPOX that he was there to discuss Mustafi.
