Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers is confident of signing a midfielder before Monday’s deadline and hinted it could be Watford’s Nathaniel Chalobah.
The Foxes, who lost 3-1 to Leeds on Sunday, will be without Dennis Praet for up to three months. The Belgium international damaged a hamstring in the final few minutes of the FA Cup victory at Stoke on January 9.
Wilfred Ndidi will miss at least another week – also with a hamstring injury – and Rodgers is set to act. The Northern Irish tactician knows Chalobah well.
He was in charge of the Chelsea academy while Chalobah was in the Blues’ youth ranks. The 26-year-old made 10 appearances for Chelsea before joining the Hornets.
The Sierra Leone-born midfielder spent time on loan with many clubs, including Watford. He was also loaned to Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough, Burnley, Reading and Napoli before ending up at Vicarage Road.
And now it seems as though a reunion could be on the cards.
Asked if he thought he would sign a player before Monday’s deadline Rodgers replied: “Yes. It’ll be good for the team, we have a gap there so the club will work hard at looking to get someone in.
“Our idea is to get a midfield player. If we can do that, then great.”
He went on to say: “I clearly know Nathaniel from my time working with him at Chelsea, but I know lots of players and there are a number of players that we’re looking at.”
Chalobah, who has a solitary England cap, has made 24 Championship appearances for the Hertfordshire club this term. He has helped them to fourth in the table, just three points off an automatic promotion spot.
Gray excited by German move
While Chalobah could be moving to the King Power Stadium, Demarai Gray has left to join Bayer Leverkusen. The winger has played just 18 minutes of top-flight football for the East Midlanders this season.
He made 169 appearances for the Foxes and claimed a Premier League winners’ medal in 2015-2016. Earlier this week, he was linked with Crystal Palace, while Benfica and Monaco were also said to be keen.
But he has moved to the Bundesliga and feels he has the game to do well.
“I like German football,” he told Leverkusen’s official website. “I’ve seen how Bayer 04 attack, are aggressive with great technique going forward and like to dictate the game through possession.
“I’ll fit in well. I can and I would like to develop here and be successful with this attractive team.”
Bayer sporting director Simon Rolfes said: “Demarai Gray is a tricky, very fast and penetrating winger who will give our attacking game an additional boost.
“He’s capable of winning out in fast one-on-ones and bringing his team-mates into play. Thanks to his experience in the Premier League, Demarai is a player who can help us straight away.”
