Manchester United have had an enquiry about Sporting winger Pedro Goncalves knocked back this month, according to a report.
Previous speculation has indicated that the Red Devils have shown initial interest in the 22-year-old.
However, they did not suggest that a firm approach had arrived from the Old Trafford club.
Now, though, Record (via Sport Witness) claims that United have in fact made an approach. The source does not state when their enquiry came in, only that it arrived some time this month.
Nevertheless, Sporting immediately turned it down, insisting that they want Goncalves to stay until at least the end of the season.
What’s more, earlier reports have said that Goncalves shares the same stance; he wants to win the Portuguese top flight, with Sporting four points clear at the summit after 15 games.
In any case, there may come a time when Goncalves may be the subject of firmer interest across Europe.
While his contract until 2025 would normally protect his value, his €60million (£53million) release clause leaves the door open for top clubs to snap him up.
Goncalves has shone this season, contributing directly to 15 goals in all competitions. That collection includes 12 goals and three assists. In fact, he scored 10 times in a run of six successive games earlier this term.
United have searched for a new winger for some time. Indeed, Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho proved a long-term target in the summer, but the English giants did not want to pay his £108million exit fee.
Instead, the Red Devils switched strategy, adopting a policy of signing the world’s brightest young talents.
Teenage wingers Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri both fit that bill, the pair signing on in October. But while Diallo could soon make his first-team debut, the latter is close to sealing a loan move away.
Report reveals Sancho back-up
Meanwhile, United reportedly still have Sancho on their radar.
The 20-year-old is more likely to leave this summer given he has eaten into another year of his Dortmund contract.
However, reports claim that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have identified a back-up option.
