Several Liverpool scouts have voiced disagreement over the club’s decision not to sign a new centre-back this month, according to a report.
Liverpool came into the January transfer window with no senior centre-backs available; Joel Matip suffered injury in late December adding to long-term absentees Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
As such, manager Jurgen Klopp has opted to play over 10 different partnerships to fill his void.
Klopp has also spoken on numerous occasions about the prospect of a new defensive signing. He firstly admitted that the coronavirus pandemic has forced Liverpool to avoid what would normally be an obvious transfer.
However, he then pointed to the club’s Fenway Sports Group owners, insisting that they were unwilling to spend.
According to The Athletic, some Liverpool scouts feel surprised and frustrated at the club’s lack of action over a new defender.
What’s more, they believe that solving their shortage at the back is the club’s ‘obvious solution’.
However, the Reds‘ transfer team, including sporting director Michael Edwards, have set their sights on a summer transfer.
Indeed, key background figures are insistent that their January stance will not change before Monday’s deadline.
In the absence of more senior stars, Klopp has opted to use a mixture of experience and youth in defence.
While Fabinho has slotted in seamlessly, fellow midfielder Jordan Henderson, Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams have all played alongside the Brazilian.
Matip has since returned to fitness, but his inconsistency remains a concern.
Liverpool likely to seal one arrival
Liverpool are likely to complete one incoming before the cut-off, though. Exciting Derby youngster Kaide Gordon is close to joining up with the Reds’ youth ranks.
Indeed, Premier League approval is all that is left on the agenda for the deal to go through, reports claim.
Gordon, 16, recently earned rave reviews from newly-appointed Derby head coach Wayne Rooney.
