Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah is closing in on a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, according to a report.
Fosu-Mensah, 23, is close to agreeing a permanent £1.5m deal, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The defender has been interesting a raft of German clubs, while Ajax were also keen on a deal.
The player is believed to favour a return to his old club Ajax, but the report suggests “sources close to the player accept that is unlikely”.
Fosu-Mensah is out of contract at the end of the season after turning down a fresh contract offer at Old Trafford.
United triggered a one-year extension on his deal last year to protect the player’s value, but Fosu-Mensah is desperate to play some football.
The right-back has made just three appearances this season and is well down the pecking order at right-back.
He started the first Premier League games of the season – the 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace – and has made the squad only twice since.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all but confirmed Fosu-Mensah was expected to leave on Friday.
“I’m not sure if Timo is going to stay or [if] he’s going to take an option now,” Solskjaer said, per the Metro.
“He’s not played enough, so of course he’s been allowed to speak to clubs, with a view to leaving now in January.
“It’s difficult when you’ve got good players, talented players, and you can’t give them game time.
“He’s now at the stage where he needs to go and play again. It might be [at the] end of January, or it might be in the summer that he finds somewhere else.”
Upamecano possibilities
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig are open to the possibility of selling the likes of Dayot Upamecano, with United and Liverpool both linked.
The German club are now established among the elite of the Bundesliga and sit second behind Bayern Munich in the standings. It seems a well-run club, with players sold on for a profit to keep the finances moving.
Manager Julian Nagelsmann coped with the summer loss of star striker Timo Werner, who joined Chelsea for £47.5 million. Upamecano could well be the next man out, with CEO Oliver Mintzlaff explaining his position on transfers.
“We have a squad that is very broad in terms of quality,” he told SportBild. “So we will sell top performers again if it makes financial sense and we can cope with it from a sporting point of view.”
