Allardyce wants French midfield star for West Brom relegation fight Sam Allardyce is eager for West Brom to make a move for Rennes midfielder Clement Grenier, a report has said. The Frenchman is out of contract this summer but is available to leave for free this month. Allardyce wants the Baggies’ hierarchy to bankroll a move for the 30-year-old so he can aid their attempts to maintain Premier League status, according to The Sun. Despite being available on a free transfer, Grenier’s wages will come at a premium. That may pose a problem for West Brom, but if they could overcome that hurdle, he would be a vital reinforcement. He has five caps for his national side and most notably played for Lyon, where he racked up 18 goals and 28 assists in 154 matches. He scored his second goal of the season for Rennes at the weekend and made five appearances in their Champions League campaign. The move could be part of a major overhaul for the Midlands outfit in the January transfer window. Allardyce believes the current squad at his disposal does not possess the quality required to stay in the top-flight. “We need players in more than anyone else in the Premier League to give us a chance of moving out of the position we’re in,” he said.   Subscribe for free to TEAMtalk’s daily newsletter… The 66-year-old replaced Slaven Bilic at the helm last month.
