Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar has questioned whether Alisson Becker has the correct training procedures in place amid his recent injuries.
Brazilian stopper Alisson has endured four spells on the sidelines since the start of last season. Tellingly, though, three of those injuries came in training.
Indeed, a calf problem is the only in-game issue he has faced; that came on the opening day last term. Elsewhere, he has suffered shoulder, hip and hamstring injuries in preparation for matches.
In the 28-year-old‘s absence, Liverpool have had mixed fortunes with Adrian and Caoimhin Kelleher.
Either way, Alisson has proved a vital cog in Jurgen Klopp‘s team and Grobbellar says that he is puzzled about his injury record.
“When you look at last season, Alisson got injured in the first game of the season, then Adrian picks up and does very well,” the 63-year-old said.
“Alisson comes back and they win the league by plenty and all of a sudden, he is injured again and it is almost ‘hold up, what is he doing in training?’ That is my question,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“For him to get injured, I would ask what is he doing in training? He has been unlucky and picked up injuries but whoever we have put in goal has done the business.”
While Adrian has put in some solid performances between the sticks, he has also faced criticism. Indeed, he played a part in allowing Atletico Madrid to knock Liverpool out of the Champions League last season.
Kelleher, meanwhile, shone on his Champions League debut in the all-important win over Ajax. The 22-year-old followed that up with another impressive display in his Premier League bow.
Liverpool blessed with goalkeeping talent
“We are blessed with so many good goalkeepers at Liverpool Football Club,” Grobbelaar added.
“I am going to go down the pecking order and there is a Polish kid there, Kamil Grabara, and he is only around the same age as Kelleher.
“He is looking very good, so we’ve picked up some good goalkeepers on our rounds.”
Liverpool had struggled to find a dominant goalkeeper for some time before Alisson’s arrival. Simon Mignolet was the first choice for a number of seasons but struggled to truly convince.
Loris Karius, meanwhile, left on loan after he cost the Reds in the 2018 Champions League final.
