Liverpool and Man Utd look set to be beaten by Real Madrid in the race to sign a £62m Sporting wonderkid, while Ronald Koeman insists Barcelona must buy his top target in January – all in Friday’s Euro Paper Talk.
REAL CLOSING IN ON SPORTING WONDERKID
Liverpool and Manchester United reportedly face losing out to Real Madrid in the race to sign Portuguese wonderkid Nuno Mendes.
The Spanish giants have stepped up their interest in the Sporting Lisbon left-back, who is regarded as one of the top young defenders in Europe.
AC Milan and Juventus are also among the host of top clubs on the trail of the 18-year-old, who made his professional debut only six months ago.
Recent reports claimed that Sporting had increased the teenager’s release clause from £41m to £62m in a bid to ward off potential suitors. However, those terms are yet to have been agreed.
And that has opened the door for Real to make their move, ahead of a host of English clubs.
Leicester and Arsenal have also been linked with Mendes, but it has been Liverpool and United who have led the way.
The Portugal Under-21 international is represented by Miguel Pinho, who oversaw Bruno Fernandes move to United from Sporting last January.
Former Red Devils winger Nani is also believed to have alerted his old club to Mendes’ qualities.
However, that advice looks set to come to nothing if Real win the race for his signature.
