Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund have been urged to sign Liverpool’s forgotten striker Divock Origi in the January transfer window.
Origi, 25, has been on the Liverpool books since 2014. After returning to Lille on loan, he made his Reds debut in September 2015 but has not enjoyed the expected impact.
With only sporadic appearances over the past five years, he has scored 19 Premier League goals from 93 outings. However, he did score twice in the famous Champions League comeback against Barcelona and in the final victory over Tottenham.
For every one step forward there has been two back and the Belgium international is still on the peripheries. He has played just seven minutes of league football in 2020-2021.
Jurgen Klopp has given him game time in the Champions League, with three starts in the group campaign. But it is not enough for a player who hopes to represent his nation at next year’s delayed European Championship.
The Belgian media have urged him to leave, with Voetbal 24 suggesting Club Brugge may look for a loan deal. However, former Bayern Munich midfielder Stefan Effenberg feels Dortmund should try to sign him next month.
Writing in his column for t-Online, the former Germany midfielder gave his reasons why they need Origi. Youssoufa Moukoko, 16, and 20-year-old Erling Haaland are exciting talents. But Effenberg believes BVB need experience in the ranks right now.
He wrote: “I wrote months ago that they should sign a striker like Mario Mandzukic. Incidentally, that would still be available and has been without a club for half a year. Even if he wasn’t really fit, he would help for 20 or 30 minutes.
“Two other candidates for a winter transfer or at least a loan deal until the end of the season: Divock Origi from Liverpool or Mauro Icardi from PSG.
“They haven’t played there this season, have just sat in the stands several times, but have long since proven their skills and might help immediately.”
Origi move makes sense
The arrival of Diogo Jota in the summer further pushed Origi down the Anfield pecking order. He spent the 2017-2018 campaign on loan with Wolfsburg and another temporary exit might suit all parties concerned. However, it is open to debate as to whether he has a long-term future on Merseyside.
Klopp may look to keep him for another assault on the Champions League. But the carrot of a place at Euro 2020 might force the Ostend man to push for a move away.
