OVERMARS, VAN DER SAR AVAILABLE
Manchester United will reportedly be on ‘red alert’ after senior Ajax pair Marc Overmars and Edwin van der Sar made themselves available for a new role, according to a report.
United have put significant recent effort into finding a director of football, or someone of a similar ilk. Indeed, chief negotiator Matt Judge and right-hand man Ed Woodward currently lead the club’s transfer negotiations.
However, that approach has come in for criticism, with United failing to land top targets in recent windows.
Ajax director of football Overmars has played a fantastic role alongside the club’s chief executive Van der Sar in helping the side get back amongst the elite in recent seasons.
Indeed, their recruitment played a key role as the Dutch champions reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
Now, Overmars has declared that he and Van der Sar are looking for a new challenge.
“When I was appointed in this job at Ajax I knew I only wanted to stay for three or four years maximum,” Overmars said (via the Sunday Mirror).
“I have been here eight seasons now! For me – but just as much for Edwin – it is sure that we are not going to carry on here until we are 60.
“This job at Ajax is costing too much energy. The whole of the Netherlands is constantly on my back and has an opinion about us.
“The job has brought a lot of great things too. Edwin and I are proud that we have brought Ajax back where it should be in Europe.”
As well as reaching the Champions League semi-finals, Ajax reached the Europa League final in 2017.
