Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Mohamed Salah is to come back to training after returning a negative test for coronavirus.
Salah contracted Covid-19 while on international duty with Egypt and has spent a period in self-isolation. Indeed, he returned two positive tests before also showing signs of the virus in a later probe.
That third test came on Wednesday, which meant he missed the Reds’ statement 3-0 win over Leicester on Sunday.
However, he has since returned his first negative test, which means he can rejoin his colleagues on the training field. What’s more, Liverpool will be able to monitor him further with more tests this week.
That’s what I’ve heard, a negative today [Sunday],” Klopp told reporters after the victory over the Foxes.
“I think from now he is pretty normal in all the testing. Tomorrow we have UEFA testing and I am pretty sure he will be in that.
“He can train with us tomorrow. There are two tests in the next two days so he will be tested.”
Liverpool looked at their best on Sunday, despite missing a raft of key stars. As well as Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson were among the other notable absentees.
However, attacker Xherdan Shaqiri did also not feature in the matchday squad. The Swiss has proved a key asset of late to Klopp, who explained the surprise manner of his injury.
Klopp confirms Shaqiri blow
“How I know it, Shaq had a little muscle injury with the national team which he didn’t really realise and then he trained with us,” the manager said (via the Liverpool Echo).
“We gave him a day off then he came back and was involved in a session, but it was not fully involved, he just did a little bit.
“After that he felt a little bit and then we made a scan and they found out it was an injury from five or six days ago.
“Nobody knew about that, not even Shaq knew about that. That’s how things sometimes are.
“So he was not able to be involved.”
Naby Keita also suffered injury in the 3-0 win, going down with a hamstring problem after 51 minutes.
