RB Leipzig are ‘expecting’ Liverpool to make a January move for centre-back Dayot Upamecano to fill their defensive void, according to a report.
The Reds will likely be without Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season after his serious knee injury.
As such, Klopp only has Joel Matip and Joe Gomez as his recognised pairing. Indeed, in Matip’s fresh injury absence, Fabinho has filled in to good effect.
However, previous reports claimed that several centre-backs are on Jurgen Klopp‘s radar to find cover.
According to the Sunday World, Liverpool’s ‘chief’ target is Leipzig’s Frenchman Upamecano. The 21-year-old has risen to become one of his club’s most senior players since his arrival in 2017.
Such a presence has reportedly caught the eye of Liverpool chiefs, who Leipzig ‘expect’ to make a serious bid.
Previous speculation has claimed that Leipzig value Upamecano at over £50million. However, the Sunday World says that a bid of at least £40million would be difficult to turn down.
Upamecano was reportedly the subject of interest from Manchester United in the recent transfer window.
And while he stayed put, Leipzig have admitted that next summer could be the right time for him to move on.
In fact, one report claimed that United could have signed the centre-back for £700,000 back in 2015. However, Red Devils chiefs did not want to pay more than £500,000 and so walked away.
Four weeks after those talks between United and Upamecano’s former club Valenciennes, he signed for RB Salzburg.
From there, he took the well-trodden path to Leipzig in 2017 and has caught admiring glances across Europe.

Liverpool open £20m defender talks
Meanwhile, reports elsewhere claim that Liverpool have opened talks about a deal for Schalke defender Ozan Kabak.
The 20-year-old is another of Europe’s highly-coveted centre-backs after only a year in the Bundesliga.
And speculation claims that Liverpool could match Schalke’s £30million asking price with a specific deal structure.
