Everton had already escaped a red card and a penalty for goalkeeper Jordan Pickford early in the first half for a knee-high challenge on Virgil Van Dijk, which ended the Holland captain’s afternoon, but there was no VAR reprieve for the Brazilian’s lunge on Thiago Alcantara. Jordan Henderson also saw a last-gasp goal ruled out for offside in a hugely entertaining draw. Klopp speaking to Match of the Day, he said: “Performance wise I’m very, very happy. Best away game we’ve played here since I started managing. I saw a really good performance. “I would be more happy if we win but I wanted to see a response and see the team we were before.We gave away two goals on set-pieces after changing formation. “We were dominant against a flying side. Different things happened today. This type of offside I didn’t see in the Virgil and Pickford incident. “I didn’t see it back but it took a while so obviously it wasn’t too big an offside and Jordan Pickford takes him out the game. I didn’t see it back I only saw it briefly. For [Jordan] Henderson’s goal I didn’t see offside – but it is because someone decided it. “Pickford kicks him completely. I need to watch it back. I’ve seen the disallowed goal at the end and in the picture I saw it wasn’t offside. Can someone explain that to me?” Klopp added. “I don’t know where the line is where you can do offside. Yes, we should have won this game. The boys played a super game against a side with quality and confidence. Dominating from the first second is absolutely exceptional.” “It is difficult in the moment. It’s a massive foul on Thiago [for Richarlison’s sending off] it looks not good to be honest. The game was brilliant but it’s over, we got one point and that’s the situation. The game was good, I loved it in so many moments how we played against such a good side.” On Thiago’s fitness he added: “He at least got a proper knock in the Richarlison situation.” Physical battle Everton striker Calvert-Lewin said it was always going to be a physical battle. He told Sky Sports: “With a derby you’ve got tackles flying, 50-50s, and it’s physical. So there’s always a chance the ref might bring out a yellow or a red. “We’ve shown we made strides by getting back in the game and had chances to win it but we didn’t take them. “I’m disappointed we didn’t kick on at 1-1, but we’ve done well to get back in the game. “I genuinely thought we would do it this time (beat Liverpool after a 10-year gap).
