Atletico were heavily linked with the Uruguay midfielder, and they finally got the deal done as Thomas Partey moved to Arsenal. Both deals were independent with the 24-year-old signing on loan for the LaLiga side until the end of the season. Atletico will pay a loan fee, and cover his wages for the season. However, it’s now been confirmed by agent Pablo Bentancur that Atletico did not secure an option to sign him next summer. That means that should the player impress, then Atleti will have to pay significantly more than the reported £20m he’s currently valued at. The ‘masterstroke’ was apparently made at the insistence of technical director Edu. While the Uruguayan is a long way down Mikel Arteta’s pecking order, it’s felt a move to LaLiga will suit his game. And with Partey heading in the opposite direction, the former Sampdoria man will be given ample chances to show his worth. The likes of Torino and Roma were also linked with a move for Torreira. Bentancur, however, insisted Torreira only wanted to join Atletico once he became aware of their interest. “Lucas’s operation [transfer] was very complicated,” Bentancur told Sport890. “Arsenal were targeting Thomas Partey. When the two clubs have a different objective it is difficult to be in the middle of the two operations. “We had other agreed-upon teams such as Roma, Fiorentina and Lazio, who play the Champions League. But Lucas was blunt. He told us that his goal was Atletico and that we get it for him and we work for the players. “He closed all the other possibilities, it either, ‘yes or yes’ to Atletico. Luckily in the end it was done. “They have agreed a loan for a year without a purchase option and the price is not defined. It will depend on his performance. “There is no option to buy because Arsenal had to pay the clause for Thomas.” Torreira wanted out Despite the signing of Partey, it was the capture of Dani Ceballos again that saw Torreira talk about leaving the club. In August he said: “I have to think thoroughly about my future. I have a contract with Arsenal and I have to respect it. “Obviously, if I were to leave, I would do it for the best possible destination. We have to be calm and wait. “Last season I played continuously, this one less so. “This year has been more complicated: I have lost continuity and confidence. I do not like this.
