Jamie Redknapp claims that Thiago Silva could turn out to be Chelsea’s best signing of the summer.
Chelsea have spent heavily in the transfer window, leading to anticipation that they could challenge for the title.
Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell have arrived at Stamford Bridge for big sums. Kai Havertz is likely to follow in the near future.
Chelsea have spent more than £100m on transfers over the past few months, but Sky Sports pundit Redknapp thinks their best signing could be the one they got for free.
Despite being 35 years old, there are high expectations that Silva could transform the Chelsea rearguard. Indeed, he showed how strong he still was in PSG’s Champions League run.
And Redknapp thinks that Silva will prove to be a wise addition at Stamford Bridge.
“It might not be the most exciting, but [their best signing] might end up being Thiago Silva because of his experience,” he told Sky Sports.
“They’ve got a lot of good young players, but sometimes you need someone that can come in at the end of their career and just calm everybody down.
“He’s got an amazing know-how, he’s played at the top all of his career, he’s played for some of the biggest clubs – the likes of AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
“He’s a winner, played for his country countless times, captained his country. So he’ll be a brilliant addition for them.”
Redknapp ponders Silva partner
Redknapp added that he is unsure which player Frank Lampard will choose to play alongside Silva.
However, he thinks the Blues boss will continue to give young players a chance.
Redknapp added: “It will be interesting to see who Frank sees as the best partner for him. Is it [Kurt] Zouma? Is it [Andreas] Christensen? We don’t quite know that yet. And obviously in front of him you’ve got one of the best defensive midfield players in N’Golo Kante.
“So for the first time ever they’re giving young players a chance, the likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham. [Fikayo] Tomori had a lot of games last year as well.
“A new goalkeeper would be something that Frank will be trying to address, but it’s not that easy to find a goalkeeper. It’s really difficult.”
