Aston Villa make enquiry about Tottenham goalkeeper Aston Villa have registered their interest in Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, according to reports. Gazzaniga has spent the past three seasons as Spurs’ backup keeper, making 18 Premier League appearances in 2019-20. However, Joe Hart recently joined the club as well, adding further competition for places in goal. Therefore, Gazzaniga may have to move elsewhere if he wants more regular gametime, having only ever reached 30 appearances in a season once – when he was on loan in the Spanish second division with Rayo Vallecano from Southampton in 2016-17. And according to Sky Sports, the Argentine has a potential suitor in the Premier League. Aston Villa are the interested party. They are on the lookout for a new keeper after first choice Tom Heaton confirmed he would miss the start of the season with injury. Villa struggled to settle on a replacement after Heaton suffered his injury midway through last season. Neither Pepe Reina – who has since left the club – nor Orjan Nyland convinced. Therefore, Gazzaniga could be the reliable option they need to step in for Heaton. Two years remain on Gazzaniga’s contract, with his transfer value not made clear. Villa’s main priority is to sign a striker, so they want to save more of their budget for that. Fulham also want Gazzaniga; Villa have another option Villa would also have to beat competition from Fulham for the 28-year-old, who won his only cap for Argentina in 2018. One of his competitors for that role with the national team, Sergio Romero, is also reportedly an option for Villa. Like Gazzaniga, Romero has fallen down the pecking order at his current club, but has proven himself whenever called upon. Dean Henderson recently returned to Old Trafford after a loan at Sheffield United. The England keeper will fight David De Gea for the starting berth in goal at Manchester United, making Romero’s chances of gametime slim. Despite Romero’s potential availability, it is Gazzaniga whom Villa have enquired about.
