€100m Premier League bid for Gareth Bale rejected last summer, says Calderon Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon says Los Blancos rejected a bid of €100m for Gareth Bale from a Premier League last summer. Bale looked destined to end his troubles and leave Real last summer with a move to China well down the line. However, a deal to take him to Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning was blocked by Madrid at the 11th hour. Asked about his future recently, Bale – whose projected deal in China was £1million a week for three years – told Sky Sports: “I think the club needs to answer that question because I tried to leave last year. They blocked everything at the last second. “It was a project I was excited for last year but it didn’t materialise. “There’s been other instances where we’ve tried to go. But the club won’t allow it or done something.” Now Calderon says an English club also tried to move for the 31-year-old on the final day of last summer’s transfer window. “I know in the last day of the transfer window last year there was an offer from the Premier League,” ex-president, Ramon Calderon, told talkSPORT. “They offered €100m and Real Madrid turned down that offer […] I’m not allowed to say the name, though I do know the name of the club. “I think at the end there was a disagreement as Madrid decided not to sell the player, because they thought he was a player who could be used and be in the starting line-up.” Madrid making life difficult Real president Florentino Perez seems unwilling to offload Bale, despite Zinedine Zidane’s reluctance to play the Wales star. Bale added: “But as I said, it’s in the club’s hands. They make things very difficult to be honest. “I want to play football and I’m still motivated to play football. I’m only 31 and feel I’m in great shape still.” Bale has been linked with former club Tottenham and Manchester United and said returning to the Premier League – which he left in 2013 for a then world record fee of £85.3million – would be an option. He said: “If those options arise then I’d look at it for sure. We have plenty of time in this transfer window and I guess a couple of others as well. Time will tell.” Bale, who is contracted to Real until June 2022, played just 48 minutes of Madrid’s 12 games when the Spanish season resumed after the coronavirus lockdown.
