Liverpool and Manchester City will battle for an exciting teenager, while Manchester United are offering a last-ditch deal to a midfielder – all in the latest Paper Talk.
LIVERPOOL, MAN CITY AFTER BELGIAN STARLET
Liverpool and Manchester City have both shown serious interest in a summer move for Belgian teenager Aster Vranckx, according to a report.
The 17-year-old, who plays for Belgian top-flight side KV Mechelen, broke through to the first team at the start of the season and enjoyed a solid campaign before football was brought to a halt in March.
The midfielder, who can play across the centre of the park, has made nine appearances in the Jupiler Pro League and according to the Daily Mirror, his performances have attracted interest from the top Premier League duo.
The newspaper claims that Liverpool and City have watched Vranckx – one of Europe’s “most prized teenagers” – on at least three occasions since his breakthrough.
Indeed, both clubs were reportedly in attendance when Vranckx scored one goal and assisted another in a 2-0 win over Anderlecht in February.
It is said that Liverpool have been tracking the player since he made his debut at the age of 16, with Bayern Munich and Feyenoord two of the other parties interested.
As for the finances of a potential deal, the global financial crisis football is facing will reportedly make it “almost certain” that Mechelen will cash in.
The Daily Mirror adds that a move will cost £1.5million initially, which will be a sensible deal given the expected reluctance to spend from most clubs.
Vranckx also has three caps for Belgium’s Under-19s side.
