Manchester United have made a “last-ditch” £30,000-a-week offer to Angel Gomes, according to a report.
Gomes, 19, is out of contract in July and will quit Old Trafford for free if he cannot agree an extension to his contract.
According to Metro, United’s offer of a contract worth £25,000 per week left Gomes’ representatives “unimpressed” earlier in the season.
United though reportedly believed their offer was generous given Chong’s 11-year association with the club, but the player’s agent was left considering other options.
Metro claimed that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was keen on swooping for the midfielder and has a number of avenues through which to convince both Chong and his representatives and the Blues remain keen.
United though have upped their offer to around £30,000-a-week, plus additional bonuses for appearances, goals and trophies won, report The Sun.
The report says United are desperate not to lose Gomes to Chelsea, but their offer which is described as “last-ditch” is unlikely to convince Gomes, who is currently paid around £17,000-a-week, despite making just five first-team appearances.
The England Under-20 international – who joined the club as a schoolboy – wants to stay as long as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can assure him of first-team action.
Gomes is believed to be worried about 16-year-old wonderkid Jude Bellingham, who visited Carrington earlier this year. United are desperate to sign the Birmingham teenager, who would present another road block to the first team for Gomes.
Youngsters Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams have both signed new, improved contracts in recent months.
