Gary Neville has said that Manchester United’s wealth will mean they will likely beat Europe’s other big clubs to top signings this summer.
The postponement of football across the continent since March has already had an impact on clubs, with – for instance – Barcelona reportedly planning several sales to raise funds and Napoli’s losses expected to go past €20million.
However, last month United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted that the developing situation is one which his side – one of the richest in the world – could “exploit” when the market re-opens.
The Red Devils have been criticised in recent years for spending sizeable funds and failing to get significant success in return, with the club currently sitting 37 points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League table.
Speaking on Sky Sports The Football Show, though, Neville echoed Solskjaer’s sentiment and explained how United’s wealth will put them in a much better position to sign top players.
“If we hadn’t had this virus, I still think Manchester United could be two or three years away,” the former full-back said.
“If you were a top player in Europe at this moment in time, and you had the choice of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Manchester City, Liverpool, United would likely lose out on those players to go to those clubs.
“I think, now, six of them could be completely redundant in the transfer market in terms of spending £50million, £60million, £70million, £80million.
“United’s ability will still be there to do those things, so the reason I’m a little bit more confident is that the number one players in the world and in Europe this summer will either stay where they are or they’ll end up at City, United, a club that still has the wealth to compete.
“That’s why I’m more confident that the salaries that United will be able to offer this summer and the funds that they’ll have will mean they’ll just get higher up the chain than they would have been previously.”
United have been heavily linked in the past few months with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, who is expected to cost at least £80million.
The latest report has suggested, though, that the England international could look to stay at Dortmund for another season.
Other reported targets include Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish and Leicester City’s James Maddison.
United are said to be pursuing a deal for Grealish this summer, according to the latest claim.
