Chelsea winger Willian has said that he would be willing to play on in the summer – past the expiry of his contract – if it meant helping the Blues finish their season.
All Premier League football has been halted until April 4 at the earliest due to the spread of coronavirus, which has so far led to 104 deaths in the UK and over 2,000 confirmed cases.
Premier League shareholders are to meet on Thursday to discuss possible solutions that would allow the current season to be finished.
Several players in the top flight will see their contracts expire this summer, one of whom is Brazil international Willian.
Speaking to Esporte Interativo (via the Daily Mail), Willian insisted that while the legalities of his contractual situation remain unclear, he would be willing to play on immediately.
“My contract really ends I think in July,” the 31-year-old said.
“And if I had to play on those dates, in these months, I think it would be no problem for me to end the League in a way which would be loyal to the club, as they always were with me. Regardless of a signed paper.
“But it’s clear that this is not a certainty, we don’t know what can happen.
“But without a doubt, as always, I will always be ready to give the best to my club regardless of my contract situation.”
In other news, Chelsea are reportedly willing to bring in three players from the Serie A in a £200million-plus raid this summer.
One player involved in the move is Juventus’ Miralem Pjanic, whose future under boss Maurizio Sarri is said to be unclear.
