Erling Haaland has been advised to resist the urge to jump ship and sign for Real Madrid this summer, amid claims the Spanish giants were preparing a ‘money-no-object’ approach for the Borussia Dortmund goal machine.
El Chiringuito TV journalist Jose Luis Sanchez claims Real are watching Haaland’s efforts in Germany closely, and they cannot have failed to have been impressed.
The Norway striker has taken the Bundesliga by storm, hitting 12 goals in eight games since arriving from RB Salzburg in January.
Dortmund paid Haaland’s release clause of €22.5m, while also handing the 19-year-old’s advisor, Mino Raiola a €10m payment, and then immediately slapped a release clause in his four-and-a-half-year deal.
According to the German publication Sport Bild, Haaland’s agent has negotiated a €75m buy-out fee that will only come into force after this summer’s transfer window.
That would leave Dortmund in a position where they could name their price for Haaland, who has also contributed two assists in his short time at the Westfalenstadion.
Real Madrid have been short of goals ever since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer of 2018 and with Karim Benzema aged 32, they will be looking for a marquee signing in the summer.
All the reports have been pointing towards Madrid going for Kylian Mbappe, but as Marca point out the French forward would be expensive and difficult to prise away from PSG as he is under contract until 2022.
And while any move for Haaland would also set Real back huge money, pundit Steve McManaman has urged the player – who also still remains on Manchester United’s radar – to resist the urge to move for the Bernabeu just yet.
“It’s too soon for him to leave Borussia Dortmund. He seems to be happy and more importantly he’s playing regularly and scoring goals,” McManaman said in his column for HorseRacing.net
“He should stay, he should play and he should get a couple of more years under his belt.
“He should move when he’s a more experienced player after playing 200 or so games for Dortmund and playing 20 to 30 games in the Champions League, which he should do.
“He can’t just go and jump ship and go to Real Madrid. You’ve seen what’s happened to Luka Jovic this season, he’s hardly kicked a ball for Real Madrid after having a wonderful season last year in Germany.
“Haaland doesn’t need that pressure. On top of that, I’ve heard that Real Madrid are interested in Kylian Mbappe instead, so both of them don’t need to be there at the same time.”
United’s hopes, meanwhile, of signing Haaland in the future have been given a lift after Haaland admitted he wants to move around countries, much like one his idols Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“I like his mentality and how he sees different things. I think I’ve always had that confidence, too – that’s just me,” said Haaland, in the latest issue of FourFourTwo magazine.
“I also like how he moves from one club to another, in another country – which isn’t easy – but he always comes in and just bangs in goals, from the first second. I liked seeing that.
“We’re both strikers and we’re both tall. But we have a different game. It’s hard to compare us. I am who I am.”
Haaland praise for Solskjaer
Haaland also had warm words of praise for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having worked under his countryman during his formative years at Molde.
On how the Norwegian aided his development, he said: “I arrived at Molde as a young kid, and he helped me a lot. He was a good finisher, and helped me with striking skills and different finishing methods. He’s been important in my career.”
