Paul Merson has taken Manchester United to the cleaners after aiming at a jibe at the Red Devils over their apparent interest in signing Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang will enter the final year of his contract this summer, and so far he has not agreed a new deal.
Head of football Raul Sanllehi and technical director Edu want their top-scorer to commit his long-term future to the club.
But with the striker yet to cement his future to Arsenal, eyes from across Europe are watching with Barcelona already confirming their interest at the turn of the year.
Tuttosport also report Ligue 1 champions PSG have made contact with Arsenal regarding the Gabon striker.
However, it’s claimed United are also pondering an approach as they look to permanently replace Romelu Lukaku, though their interest in the striker, alongside some of their big-name European counterparts, has drawn a stinging criticism from Merson, who feels a move to Old Trafford would only be a sideways move for the attacker.
“I don’t think you can say Aubameyang would be going for ambition if he went to Manchester United,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“He’d be going for the money because he’s almost 31 and this would likely to be his last move.
“At the moment, you can’t say you are going to go to Manchester United and get guaranteed trophies. You won’t be able to guarantee United winning anything in the next two or three seasons. They are getting better but it’s not ambitions, it’s the money.
“If it was Manchester City or Liverpool, that would be different. You’d be thinking of course, he’s ambitious and he wants to win things.
“I’m not saying United won’t win things, but you can’t assure me of it. I can assure you Man City or Liverpool will in the next few years.”
Merson on why Aubameyang to United would be huge coup
As well as United, PSG and Barcelona, Liverpool have also been mentioned as suitors for Aubameyang, but Merson feels a move to Old Trafford would represent a major coup for the Red Devils.
“They [United] are crying out for someone who is going to score them 20 to 25 goals, and that’s what Aubameyang can bring,” Merson added.
“He gets you 25 goals without even breaking sweat. Add a [Jack] Grealish if they can get him and then you’ve got Bruno Fernandes as well playing in behind a striker, Manchester United will be a major force.”
