Manchester United are considering bringing Eric Cantona back to Old Trafford in an ambassadorial role, according to reports.
The Frenchman spent the last five-and-a-half years of his career with Man Utd, helping inspire the start of a trophy-laden era, winning four Premier League titles and two FA Cups with the club.
Since retiring in 1997, he has gone on to experience an array of different careers, including acting, but now he could be in line for a return to the wider football industry.
According to the Mirror, Cantona could return to Man Utd as an ambassador, as the club hierarchy continue their attempts to re-connect with their successful past.
Cantona could join the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Irwin and Bryan Robson as a club ambassador, a role which would see him appear on roadshows, among various other personal appearances.
The former striker’s popularity is seen as a key motivator for the potential appointment, as it may help repair the relationship between United fans and the current board.
Cantona was in fact briefly linked with taking over as United manager before the appointment of his former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, initially as interim manager before landing the permanent role.
Meanwhile, in another sign that the club’s owners are ready to get back on track, it has been suggested that they will allow Solskjaer to spend freely in the summer transfer window.
The Norwegian is said to have a five-man transfer wishlist, with club chiefs hoping to get at least three high-profile deals done.
