Liverpool dealt potentially huge blow Timo Werner transfer blow RB Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche has hinted that Timo Werner could stay in Germany beyond the summer due to the impact of coronavirus on the Premier League. Werner was heavily linked with a January move to Chelsea, as Frank Lampard searched for a new striker after the club’s transfer ban was lifted, although the Blues have since switched their targets to Lyon frontman Moussa Dembele. But Liverpool were always considered to be Werner’s number one destination if he did move to England, with Reds Jurgen Klopp a big admirer of the Germany international. However, given the uncertainty around football due to the delays brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, Krosche has said the economic uncertainty could affect any potential move for the striker. “England has the same problems as we do,” he told Sport1 (via the Daily Star). “Their investors also have economic constraints. The crisis affects not only one industry, but has global effects.” Werner has scored 21 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions for Leipzig so far this season, and the news is sure to come as a bitter blow to Klopp’s plans for the summer. The Anfield chief wants to use Werner as a rotational player to ease the burden on his famed front three, but now may have to switch his attentions elsewhere – when football eventually gets up and running again.     Meanwhile, Liverpool exile Loris Karius could be offered a surprise lifeline in Portugal amid reports that one of the country’s biggest clubs have held preliminary talks over a deal to sign him. Karius, who is under contract at Anfield until the summer of 2021, has spent the past two seasons on loan in Turkey with Besiktas, but a permanent move to Istanbul appears unlikely with the club off the pace in the title race and seemingly planning on life without him. The Super Lig outfit do hold the right to sign Karius on a permanent deal if they pay what’s described as a ‘redemption fee’ but it appears Liverpool’s asking price for the German looks to have put them off.
