However, their failure to make that change behind the scenes could well have cost them dear this summer, with a report in the Daily Express claiming Solskjaer handed Woodward an ambitious seven-man transfer wishlist this summer. And while United brought in Daniel James, a £15m recruit from Swansea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka in a £50m switch from Crystal Palace and the £80m splurged on Harry Maguire, the Express claims Woodward only delivered a 42.8% strike rate on their list of summer targets. As per the report, Solskjaer had told Woodward he also wanted Sean Longstaff – as a replacement for Ander Herrera – Jadon Sancho – to offer the right-side of their attack more unpredictability – Paulo Dybala – who has since emerged as a target for Tottenham – and Christian Eriksen – who remains a January transfer target for the Red Devils. The report does add, in Woodward’s defence, that the list of targets ‘would be tricky for even the shrewdest negotiators to broker’. Furthermore, the paper believes Woodward deserves some credit for ridding United’s squad of some of their deadwood, with Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Matteo Darmian, Chris Smalling and Antonio Valencia all moving on.
