Paul Merson believes Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester have the quality to break back into the top four this season at the expense of one of Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal or Chelsea.
The Foxes have made a strong start to the season and remain unbeaten having beaten Sheffield United and Bournemouth and drawn with Wolves and Chelsea.
They will return to action next Saturday after the international break with a tasty clash at Old Trafford against United – a match in which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already demanding an improvement from his side – and Merson reckons the Foxes are the real deal.
Merson told the Daily Star: “Leicester are riding partly because Jamie Vardy doesn’t play for England any more and they could do something special this year.
“It’s a big ask to get in the top four but outside of Manchester City and Liverpool there is no outstanding team.
“There is certainly no reason why Leicester can’t finish in the top six and get into Europe.
“They have a good manager in Brendan Rodgers and [Jamie] Vardy looks sharp again. I think quitting international football has helped him.
“He gets more rest and can concentrate on his club. He could score a ton of goals this year. I’ve always liked Rodgers as a manager and he’s doing a good job there.
“I watched them at Chelsea and the longer it went on the more you thought they would win the game. If they can sign a top class defender to replace Harry Maguire they will be right in the mix.
“They are the strongest ones in the chasing pack.”
Merson delivers strong verdict on Everton
Merson, however, does not think Leicester are along in chasing down the establishment in the Premier League and can also foresee Everton making serious strides this season too.
“Everton have a chance too if they can get themselves going. Getting beat by Villa was a blessing in disguise. I think it woke a few players up.
“Marco Silva changed his team after that and it’s starting to click. They’re a better team now. Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean have to play. If he sticks with it they won’t be miles away.”
