Bayern Munich will roll the dice and wait until the final stages of the European transfer window before launching a last-ditch attempt to sign ex-Liverpool superstar Phillipe Coutinho, a report claims.
Following the departures of long-time wing-wizards Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, Bayern have been on the lookout for two recruits capable of filling the void left by the Bavarian club-legends.
Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi and Manchester City’s Leroy Sane were both earmarked as potential incomings for the German powerhouse, but the Premier League clubs scuppered Bayern’s hopes by remaining steadfast in their desire to retain the services of their respective wide-men.
Bayern recently filled one wing spot following the arrival of Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic on an initial one-year loan, and recent reports suggest a move for Sane could still be on the table, but now multiple outlets are reporting that Brazilian magician Coutinho could be the man selected to star on the opposite flank.
Bild (via The Mirror) report that Bayern Munich will wait until the end of the month to strike a last-gasp deal for Philippe Coutinho,
The report continues that Bayern are hopeful of securing Coutinho on a two-year loan deal for a cut-price fee, relying on the Catalan giants giving in to the pressure of the European deadline in order to successfully offload the Brazilian’s wages.
Coutinho is reported to favour a move to PSG, but that move seemingly hinges on Barcelona and the Parisian club’s ability to strike a deal over fellow Brazilian Neymar.
Not everyone involved with the Bavarian club is in favour of the move, however, as former Bayern stalwart Steffen Effenberg believes his former club would be better served overlooking Coutinho in favour of obtaining the experience of Juventus’ Mario Mandzukic instead.
Effenberg told t-online (via Goal.com) that: “Coutinho knows neither the Bundesliga nor coach [Niko] Kovac, he speaks no German and is at a top Spanish club but not a regular player.
“He has completed just eight of 38 Primera Division games over 90 minutes, scoring five goals and assisting two.
“Coutinho has great qualities, but a transfer for Bayern would be a risk.
“Bayern needs someone who can help immediately, does not need any time to adjust, is not a risk. And there’s a better solution than Coutinho in my view.”
“Mandzukic would be the second absolute top transfer [after Perisic], who would help to bring Bayern back to where they wants to go – in the top group of Europe.
“Bayern would suddenly have another chance at winning the Champions League and we would not have to talk about Leroy Sane or Timo Werner.
“He has great experience, knows the Bundesliga and coach Kovac very well.”
