Pep Guardiola has put the wind up Manchester City after revealing he wants to return to Barcelona “sooner or later”.
The 48-year-old City boss, who guided the club to a domestic Treble last season, has been at The Etihad for three years and and has won the Premier League title twice.
The Catalonia-born Guardiola is entering his fourth season with the champions and has two years remaining on his contract.
The former Barcelona boss has already publicly stated he will see out the remainder of his contract, but he has now suggested that a return home to Catalonia is on his radar.
Guardiola said recently: “I’m staying here two more seasons, if they want me. I’m satisfied working here and I’m not going anywhere.”
However, speaking at the presentation of the Cruyff Court near Barcelona this week, he said: “I will return to Barcelona sooner or later. But as president, forget about it.
“To be president, you have to know [what you’re doing] and be prepared – to have knowledge that I don’t have.
“I’m trying to be a good coach – that hasn’t gone too badly in this decade. I will return to Barcelona to live, sooner or later.”
The longest Guardiola has worked for one club is Barcelona where he spent four years before taking a sabbatical and then joining Bayern Munich for three years.
City are understood to be desperate to tie down their boss, who has an amazing 73 per cent win record with City, to a lucrative new deal.
The Sun claimed in May that “Guardiola will be given the opportunity to stay in charge of Manchester City for at least the next five years”.
That would see his annual salary rise from £15million to £20million.
Earlier this month Guardiola denied that he was planning to take a sabbatical at City.
Jeremy Cross wrote in the Daily Star that Guardiola was planning a break from football.
Guardiola though told Mundo Deportivo: “I’m not taking a year out. It’s come out in the press and been doing the rounds, but it’s not true.”
