Manchester United have agreed to meet Barcelona’s £48.3m asking price for a midfield star, while Liverpool are taking a keen interest in an upcoming Leeds United full-back, according to Wednesday’s newspapers.
UNITED IN TALKS OVER RAKITIC DEAL
Manchester United are working on a deal to bring Croatia international Ivan Rakitic to Old Trafford, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.
The Daily Express are among several papers to report that United are in discussions with Barcelona after they put him on the market for €55m (£48.3m) this summer.
Barca are willing to sell after securing a deal to bring in Frenkie de Jong this summer from Ajax for €75m and see the chance to recoup a large portion of that from the sale of Rakitic, 31, as good business.
The paper claims Rakitic, who had previously insisted he wants to stay at the Nou Camp, is coming round to the idea that he may need to move on this summer after seeing his first-team place come under serious threat, with the Catalan club looking for a refresh after their Champions League semi-final humbling at Liverpool.
Rakitic is contracted at Barca until 2021, hence the sizeable fee, but it’s reported Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees the Croatian as an upgrade on Ander Herrera, who left on a free transfer at the end of the season and looks likely to join PSG.
In other United transfer news, United are on the verge of completing a £15m deal with Swansea for their Welsh winger Daniel James.
