According to German outlet Sport1 Liverpool have enquired about the striker, who hit 12 goals and 14 assists this season for Werder in 36 games. The striker moved to Werder three years ago from Wolfsburg, but he will depart north-west Germany this summer Liverpool are interested in Kruse and are “talking to him”, but the forward has confirmed his intention to leave Werder on the expiry of his contract in June. Chief executive Frank Baumann told the club’s website: “We have always emphasised that we would have liked to continue working with Max. However, he has decided to seek a new challenge after three years.” The report claims Kruse has his eye on one final contract and is looking for a deal “in the higher single-digit million range.” Therefore, a €9m a year salary would equate to around £150,000 a week, which Klopp may well be able to meet considering there is no transfer fee to pay. Klopp is well aware of the player too having admitted to enjoying watching Bremen play earlier this season. “Whenever I have time I like to watch Dortmund because I’m still connected with them,” Klopp told DAZN. “Bremen I like to watch as well, but also Mainz – with them I’m still connected too. I also think it’s impressive the way they play under Sandro Schwarz.” Liverpool though face Bayern in pursuit of Kruse, who is not an out-and-out no.9, but a forward who can play in the hole and as a “playmaker” – an ideal back-up to Roberto Firmino. Bayern though have contacted the player as they look for a back-up to Robert Lewandowski, but it’s unsure whether the Bundesliga champions are prepared to meet Kruse’s contract demands.
