Manchester United will not sign a replacement for David De Gea should the Spaniard leave this summer, with Sergio Romero set to be promoted to the number one role instead.
Romero was signed in 2015 when the club were fearing that De Gea would join Real Madrid, and even though that move didn’t materialise then, the rumours are starting to circulate again, with the shot-stopper entering the final year of his contract.
According to the Daily Mail, with contract talks with De Gea coming to a standstill, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will instead use what he already has available rather than spending on a replacement.
Barcelona’s Jasper Cillessen, Ajax’s Andre Onana and Everton’s Jordan Pickford had all been linked with moves to United, but Solskjaer looks set to save some cash by making Romero his first choice.
Solskjaer is also keeping an eye to the future with Dean Henderson, who is expected to spend another season on loan at Sheffield United following their promotion to the Premier League. Depending on his progress, he could well be recalled to Old Trafford next season.
Romero has made seven Premier League appearances for United across his four-year stay, although none of those have come this season. However, the 32-year-old of international pedigree remains a reliable option for Solskjaer to turn to.
The Argentine is under contract until 2021, with an option for a further year.
