Arsene Wenger has refused to take pity on Alexis Sanchez following the Chilean’s struggles at Manchester United – and feels his former player has no-one to blame but himself.
The former Gunners star moved to Old Trafford in a high-profile exchange deal last January for Henrikh Mkhitaryan – but has largely flattered to deceive since swapping London for Manchester.
Sanchez was again below his best on Tuesday evening when introduced as a second-half substitute against PSG but was once again unable to impose himself as his struggles in a United shirt continued. Alan Shearer will probably be patting himself on the back right now.
Solskjaer has often preferred the revitalised Anthony Martial on the left wing – and Wenger reckons Sanchez can have no complaints at finding himself on the periphery of the side, lying the blame solely at the forward’s feet.
Assessing Sanchez’s surprising fall from grace, Wenger told beIN Sport: “He has lost his place and plays in the same position as Martial.
“Today who would dispute that Martial is indispensable for Man United? He plays and that’s competition and that’s fair competition in my opinion.”
Martial has emerged as a key figure under Solskjaer, with the United boss’ record now standing at 10 wins from the 12 matches he has overseen.
Commenting earlier in the week on his improvement since the Norwegian took charge, Martial said: “He [Solskjaer] is asking me to attack more, that’s my job after all. He’s asking me to be more decisive. I can only say we all hope we can continue to play like this.”
