A Man Utd star currently out on loan has thrown down the gauntlet after admitting he’ll “do anything” to become a regular under Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United may lead the way this summer with regards to sheer volume of player turnover. A host of stars are due to leave as free agents including Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata.
Nemanja Matic has stressed his desire to leave this summer, though the Serbian is unlikely to be the only sale sanctioned.
The futures of several players currently out on loan must be determined too. And one of those – Brandon Williams – has revealed his sights are firmly fixed on making his mark at Old Trafford next season.
The 21-year-old left-back is currently on loan with Norwich City. Williams has generated vital first-team experience this year with 24 league outings to his name. The vast bulk of those appearances have been starts.
United’s defensive issues this season have been there for all to see, and Williams seemingly believes he can provide a solution on the left side.
No 1 left-back Luke Shaw has once again struggled with injury, though the England man’s standards had dipped on last year’s when selected anyway.
Alex Telles, meanwhile, continues to labour when called upon to deputise.
Brandon Williams throws down the gauntlet
And speaking in Norwich City’s recent matchday programme, Williams outlined his desire to become Ten Hag’s go-to man next season.
“What I want to do next year is play for Manchester United at left back and that’s my job,” said Williams (via the Manchester Evening News).
“That’s what I’m determined to do because it’s my life and I’ll do anything for that.
“I know I can play in this league, and I know I can get to the top and that’s what I want to do.”
Williams then shed light on the competitive mentality he has when addressing one occasion he was not selected to start. The youngster’s response suggested he has the ideal frame of mind many current and more established United stars lack.
“There are great full backs at [Norwich[, but there’s competition all over the pitch,” added Williams. “You need someone who is going to push you, when you don’t get too comfortable and think the position is your position.
“With the manager now he’ll change it straightaway if you’re not up to his standards and his demands. He did that to me against Crystal Palace when he felt like I wasn’t playing well and he dropped me for that game and he came and spoke to me about it.
“It made me kick on and after that I’ve been concentrating 100 per cent, putting so much into my work on and off the pitch and that has set up me up for the rest of the season. People can play ahead of you because they’ve had a fantastic week in training but it’s down to the manager.
“You’ve got to impress him because he will drop you.”
