Liverpool have been tipped to offer fresh terms to two of their attackers this summer, though a third contract extension Jurgen Klopp wants may be out of his hands, per a report.
Reds fans received the news they were all clamouring to hear on Thursday afternoon. Jurgen Klopp has extended his stay at Anfield until 2026. The German’s two primary assistants – Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz – will also remain on Merseyside for the long haul.
Liverpool are riding the wave at present and remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple.
Klopp has been the driving force behind their surge, though their fortunes also owe a great deal to the recruitment department.
Liverpool’s record in the market has been exemplary, though two of their most successful signings are facing uncertain futures.
Along with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino will all see their contracts expire in 2023.
Salah’s contract saga has taken centre stage of the three. Though Mane and Firmino would undoubtedly be big misses if either – or both – were sold or allowed to walk.
Now, writing in a Q&A for the Liverpool Echo, senior journalist, Ian Doyle, was asked what the future holds for the Liverpool pair.
Mane, Firmino expected to receive offers
Doyle suggested extensions for the duo will be put on the backburner until the season concludes. Understandably, Liverpool do not want to take their players’ eyes off the ball at such a crucial stage in the season.
However, the journalist reckons it’s highly likely new deals in one form or another will be offered this summer.
“Nothing yet,” said Doyle. “In fact, I doubt there’ll be much on contracts now until the season has finished.
“It isn’t a priority right now as the focus is now completely on winning games and winning trophies. Mind you, the potential last game is only a month away, so not long to wait.
“I’d be surprised if Firmino or Mane leave in the summer, although certainly with the latter his stock is extremely high right now. I’d imagine Liverpool will at the very least offer them something to extend their stay.”
Another player whose future remains under a cloud is James Milner. But unlike Firmino and Mane, Milner’s contract expires this summer.
The midfield veteran, 36, has been a declining force in recent years. Indeed, his last eight league appearances have all come from the bench and none have been greater than 15 minute cameos.
Yet Milner adds value to Liverpool’s squad through his leadership within the group. He also brings versatility being capable of operating at either full-back position if injury strikes.
Doyle added Klopp “would like” a new Milner extension. However, he admitted it’ll depend more on the player’s plans and whether owners FSG deem a new deal for a 36-year-old a worthwhile investment.
Doyle concluded: “Jurgen Klopp would like that to happen but it all depends on what James Milner wants and what the club believe he is worthy of at age 36.”
