Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly in constant contact with Mauricio Pochettino about a return to north London, according to a report.
Spurs have endured a tough spell trying to find stability with their manager following Pochettino’s 2019 exit. Indeed, Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo both tried and failed to truly improve the club’s fortunes.
There were subsequently serious doubts about current boss Antonio Conte’s future earlier this year. He admitted in February that he was struggling to see any real progress from his players.
Tottenham are nevertheless back in the hunt for a top-four Premier League finish after a solid recent run of form. Still, fresh rumours about Conte’s future have emerged.
The Italian is reportedly ‘dreaming’ of moving to Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal from this summer.
In so doing, he would be replacing Pochettino, who is widely expected to get the sack at the French capital club.
As a result, the latest from Le Parisien is that Pochettino will ‘imminently’ leave PSG. The two parties only have to come to a financial agreement. PSG would reportedly have to pay €15million (£12.6million) in compensation to sack the Argentine, who has one year left on his deal.
And according to Get French Football News sources, Spurs chairman Levy is monitoring the situation closely.
In fact, he has reportedly been in ‘incessant’ contact with Pochettino in recent months, trying to persuade the 50-year-old to move back to Tottenham.
Although, Pochettino has given little away over his future, only that he currently feels committed to PSG. He signed a one-year extension that takes him through to 2023 last July.
And he said recently: “I have one year left on my contract so logically it is not a question of desire but a question of contract.”
Le Parisien adds in its latest report that Zinedine Zidane is PSG’s ideal Pochettino successor. However, he wants to take over the France job form Didier Deschamps after the World Cup later this year.
Conte focused on Tottenham amid Pochettino rumours
For now, though, Conte will have a laser focus on guiding Tottenham to a top-four finish this season.
Their last two results could well prove costly, the 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Brentford.
In both games, Spurs have failed to muster much attacking threat.
However, Conte is aware that Tottenham host fourth-placed Arsenal – who are two points ahead – next month.
The latest north London derby could prove one of the most defining in years for the journey of both clubs.
