Gary Neville took a small crumb of comfort in one Man Utd player’s display against Liverpool after claiming certain players are “broken” and “finished”.
Manchester United surrendered to Liverpool on a night that laid the gulf in class between the two teams bare. Jurgen Klopp’s side roared out of the traps, taking the lead within five minutes when exposing United’s left side.
From that point on there was only one winner with each of Liverpool’s starting forwards bagging at least one goal and an assist.
It was the latest capitulation for a Man Utd squad that has received vast swathes of criticism in recent years.
Bruno Fernandes admitted the fans don’t deserve what they’re being served up by the current squad right now.
Elsewhere, Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness and Roy Keane predictably took United’s stars to task. Adding to the post-match dissection was Gary Neville.
The United legend admitted his former club were a “million miles” off Liverpool in “every department”. He also claimed this is the worst United team he’s seen in 40 years regarding one specific aspect of football.
“An all-time low” – Gary Neville
Neville told Sky Sports: “Man Utd were a million miles away from that Liverpool team in every department. On and off the pitch. It was a sobering evening.
“We expected it. Not one Man Utd fan came here with any hope whatsoever. That team has got nothing.
“There are some decent players out on that pitch and some talent.
“I cannot explain how it’s gone from what would be slightly promising at the end of last season finishing second – I know they lost in the Europa League final which was a bad one – to the point where we are today which is an all-time low in my 42 years of watching United. I’ve never seen it as bad as that.
“I’ve never seen a Man Utd team wilt and be as flaky in a game of football in my 40 years.”
Yet despite his brutally honest verdict, Neville did take a small measure of pride in the lively cameo of Hannibal Mejbri.
The 19-year-old was given the unenviable task of entering the match with United 3-0 down and shoulders around him already slumped.
Nevertheless, Mejbri roared around the pitch and was unafraid to put a foot in on several Liverpool players who had otherwise gone unchecked throughout the contest.
“I erred on the unprofessional side on commentary when I said I was proud of him because he was going round trying to kick people,” added Neville.
“But he demonstrated something, he showed us something: that he didn’t like the idea at Anfield of Liverpool passing around him. The idea of Liverpool taking the mickey out of him and his team-mates.
“At least he demonstrated something. I’m not saying it was brilliant that he was kicking Liverpool players and could have hurt them, but as a Man Utd fan, they can respond to that at least.
“The rest of them… there’s some of them out there who are probably good lads, good professionals, got good careers, good talent – but they’re broken. They’re finished and they’re done this season.”
